Running in 2020 – Confessions ep.4
I allready wrote that I think it’s important to make some personal work from time to time. Being able to experiment without the pressure of having to deliver results is refreshing. It makes you try new things and learn a lot in the process. For me the challenge is to make time to shoot a personal project. Therefore it’s always good to have an excuse to get you started. This time it was a photo competition about our environment, hosted by the European Federation of Professional Photographers (I’m a member). I never ever participated in a photo contest and I’m not even sure I will this time. But at least it was an excuse to do this shoot.
Here’s the final image I was going for:
And here’s the video:
The shoot went really well and I really have to thank my two voluntary assistants, friends and fellow photographers Ake en Pieter for that. Dirk was a true professional model in not so easy circumstances. And we have to thank Didier for shooting the video footage. It was really great to work with such an enthousiast and talented team.
Here are the other images:
After these pictures model Sylviane joined us for some improvised shooting, but that’s for later.

Hey Bert, great stuff. Although I was there I love the way you document the making-off in your movie. Very interesting to see the setup & always the little tips&tricks (like letting an assistant give the sign when he hits the spot).
Oh, and ofcourse the results are really nice, both pictures & postprocessing !
Keep ‘em comming !
Hey Bert,
Great work! I’m really loving your blog! I’ve followed your work on Flickr for a while now, and have really been enjoying the blogs and video behind some of my favorite shots! Thanks for putting in the time to share this!
-Bradley B.
Nice! I’m all for taking time to experiment and jus having fun in your shoots.
Thanks guys.
@Pieter: I wouldn’t have been possible without such a fantastic team
Hi Bert,
I just want to thank you for sharing your information about the setting for the pictures you take. It’s really helpful and I’m glad you did your videos in english and not in dutch
Keep on the good work.
Cheers,
Matt
Great series, very well executed! I appreciate your behind the scenes videos.
I like the one with the setting sun the most, must remember that trick : )
I really enjoy watching your videos. In addition to being well done they provide a lot of great ideas. I find it helpful to see how a seasoned pro thinks and approaches a shoot. Thanks
Hey, great stuff! I am learning a lot here. Thanks for sharing Bert.
Bert,
Good work, thanks for sharing this with us…you are an inspiration…
looks like you are using a D30 is that correct?
also how many speedlight you normally use, I am getting started with this strobist thing…
once again congratulation, I enjoy your work.
Joseca
Fabulous stuff, and I LOVE the look of the finished product. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve also linked this video, plus your YouTube profile, to my blog. Great stuff. Keep posting it!
Warmly,
Tammy
Yours videos are really useful and interesting. Thanks a lot I really like them and I learn something.
Great photos and nice useful videos. Thank you
Your comments are really appreciated.
@ Danette: I’m not that seasoned. I’ve only been a full time pro for a few months
@ Joseca: Yup that’s a 30D. A 1D mkIII is supposed to be my primary camera, but it has been with Canon repair longer than I shot with it.
@ Tammy: thanks for linking me
@ Joseca: usually I use only one or two speedlights.
Do you use a pocket wizard for each Vivitar, or just one, the others respond optically? I’ve been looking into grabbing a few of the 285HV’s, how are you triggering all the ones you used for this shoot?
Dude, these really rock. love the video with the setup
I’m in love with your subject matter and image treatment and have learnt so much by your video. In fact, i was so impressed i’ve linked to this page from my own blog, with some praising words
Keep up the stunning work!
someone on the strobist blog has suggested changing the music — pls don’t! it’s now a comforting soundtrack to an excellent series
looking forward to more.
Great pictures! Thanks for sharing this with us. I hope you’ll be among the winners of the contest. Let us know something.
Of-course I’ll keep you posted about the competition.
Hi Bert. Absolutely great stuff, thank you so much for sharing with so many details. Pretty please keep it coming!!
I will Antoine
Heel gaaf Bert.
