Short Play with a Beta Canon 5D mark2

Many many many photographers have been looking out for the replacement of the original Canon 5D. So when Canon announced the 5D mark II a few weeks ago, it created quite a stir. The specs are amazing and Vincent Laforet’s experiments with a very early Beta version were very interesting.

Tonight I was one of the lucky few who got invited by Canon for a hands-on encounter with the new camera. I only got to play with it for a few minutes but that was enough to be impressed … very impressed. It feels and handles great and the HD videofiles are stunning. I’m not allowed to post any video samples but I can tell you that as a former video guy, I’m very happy with it. Image quality and noise are fantastic. Amazing how little noise there is on such a high resolution sensor at high iso’s. I’m too tired to write a long review. I didn’t spent enough quality time with it for a long review anyway. But I’ll give you some quick snaps. The camera is still in Beta so, the final production version might be even better. Because it’s still in Beta, there’s no software yet that can process the RAW-files, so I had to shoot jpeg. Here are some pics straight out of the camera, followed by a quick pass in Lightroom.

Wow, the ISO capability on that thing is so impressive. I hate having to struggle with the 800 limitation. Absolutely amazing.

And funny that in just a few short years, this thing will be seriously outdated.

    Hi, Bert!

I’d like to see the images without any Lightroom. In my opinion, it is very important to appreciate the differences between the performance of the camera and the photo editor.

    Have a nice day!

@KKL: I haven’t posted the full size images. But hopefully I’ll be able to give you a full review of a production sample in a few weeks.

@Miguel: The images with and without lightroom are right there.

So I wonder how does the high ISO compare to Nikon D700/D3?

@Mike: no idea, as I don’t have any Nikons.
