First Ever Ringflash Shots

Until yesterday I had never ever used a ringflash. These things are usually very expensive and I’ve never been a big fan of the eighties ringflash fashion look. That’s why I refused using a ringflash ever since I started photography. But when fellow shooter James Madelin asked me to try out his brand new Orbis ringflash anyway, it struck me: I have been acting silly all this time. Every light modifier deserves at least to be tried out. I’m determined to find some ways to fit the ringlight into my style.

I have only had a few minutes time to play with it. After yesterday’s first LIME workshop, I tried a quick dramatic ringlight portrait of Filip aka Bunker.

And tonight just before putting the kids to bed, I snapped a quick picture of Kobe. He was so impressed about the strange light source that he forgot his usual funny faces when a camera is pointed towards him.

I’m planning to do a test shoot with the Orbis and I’ll write a review soon.

Yea the pop on ring flashes are great for location when you want to travel light but still mimc the look and feel. Awesome shots Bert.

Those are nice shots Bert. I got an Orbis for Christmas and use it for fill light with pretty good success. A nice modifier to have around I’m thinking.

Stunning shots, especially the first one. If your’re fed up by hand-holding the Orbis and not willing to wait until the manufacturer comes out with a holder, I’ve did an Orbis-camera-mount DIY.

I have been looking forward to getting one of these myself. I can’t wait to see what else you can get out of it! These two portraits are fantastic!

Thanks guys. I’m also very eager to explore the possibilities in depth.

@Uwe: I was already thinking of making some kind of bracket. I may steal some of your ideas ;-)
One thing I would certainly change is to attach the flash with the focus light and sensor to the front. Using an off-camera cord, that would allow you to use TTL and the focus assist light.

I use a ringflash from time to time and i really like the look on headshots. I tend to use it with other lighting as well. The one thing I don’t like is the shadow outline but it is easily fixed by keeping them farther from the background. Keep up the great work Bert.

@ Bert: sure, turning the flash around is feasable, but then I would change the geometry of the bracket (turning it for 90 degrees and other stuff). Take a look at the manual of your flash, mine doesn’t fire the (red) focus light if connected via cable. Have fun and keep up the good work.

@Tony: I’m pretty sure I’ll use it in combination with other lighting most of the time. Not a big fan of the typical ringflash look.

@Uwe: My cams & flashes can use the focus light with the off-camera shoe cord. I’ll see if I can find some time to make a bracket.

Ziet er mooi uit Bert. Zo te zien met een groot diafragma gewerkt bij je zoontje (klop dit?). Ik gebruik ook wel eens een ringflitser (Bowens), maar krijg nauwelijks de mooi rondjes in de ogen.

@Robert: It was indeed with a large aperture

Nice. I have recently bought a macro flash (not a ring flash technically, so no circles) and I have tried a few portrait shots with it, but I am very unexperienced with that so I definitely need to work on it.. Macro is still my niche.
Your photo (of Kobe) looks quite natural even with the direct flash, it’s pretty.. and I have no idea how you accomplish that =D The first one looks very nice too, and very different from Kobe. Nice dark feel.
    Thanks for the inspiration!
