The 50/50 Project – Day 1
50/50 is a personal project in which I’ll be shooting anything and everything for the next 50 days with just a 50mm lens.
Just don’t expect me to post a video every single day. I’ll probably have to group several days into one video to keep me from crashing on day 8. But I will be shooting every day. Some days I’ll probably have lots of images on other days only a few. I will be using my usual range of equipment when I’m working for clients but I’ll stick to the 50mm for all the rest.
I could tell you so much more about why I’m doing this project but I could use some sleep too. So I’ll keep the info for a future blog post.
I wish you good luck for this project and many interesing videos

I feel it´s hard to keep up shooting every day though photography is a wonderful hobby. For me it´s the post- processing which keeps me from taking more photos because it´s a pain to upload x images, pick faves and edit them. Don´t know why but the act of pressing a shutter after having composed the image is much more appealing for me then doing all this editing stuff
And that´s mainly the reason which keeps me from starting my own 50/50 (or similar) project… So I do appreciate photographers who get over this lazyness even more
Gretings Mat
I really like this idea. Actually I was thinking on try something similar. I will follow your work (as usual). I am sure I will learn more from you.
This first video is really great.
Best wishes,
Luis
That´s a great project
Do you mind if I join you?
the 50 mm is my favorite lens (At least the favorite of the lenses I own).
And I need to take pictures!
Sounds like fun. Which 50mm will you be using, personally I love my 50f1.4.
Thanks for the inspiration. My 50mm prime is not mounted nearly enough on my camera as it should be, but now since I have accidentally dropped and destroyed my 28-75mm f/2.8 zoom I will turn and make the best out of my loss and shoot as much as I can with the nifty-fifty.
Thx all
@Mat: I can see what you mean. Invest some time in streamlining your workflow and making better pictures in-camera. I focused on that for a while and now postprocessing isn’t an obstacle anymore.
@Luis: don’t think, start a project
@Belén: Please do join me. I’m interested to see what other come up with.
@Kevin: 50 f/1.4 it is
@Christoph: You’ll be surprised how good dropping a lens can turn out in the end.
Lovely moody shots there Bert, and a great idea, I love my 50mm.
Lovely project! I’m doing more or less the same thing, but I’m doing it as it’s the only lens I have (and can afford) with a decent aperture
How, Great project Bert.
I’ll follow you
My 50mm f1.4 was mounted 80% of the time this year. I didn’t liked my Sigma 17-70mm and really prefer the 50mm f1.4. Unfortunately the 50mm do not focus anymore, and had to send it by Canon. I hope I’ll get it back shortly.
Great idea Bert
looking forward to see the results after 50 days.
Good luck
Regards
Bernt-Inge
Bert, a very interesting idea. It’s a project I will certainly follow. It reminds me of other projects like “365-days” you’ll find on Flickr. I also had a similar idea a long time ago but I never started. Maybe I should…
Nice project Bert, looking good already
Can’t wait for the results!
Hi Bert!
It´s cool to see that we had the same idea.
I’m doing a similar project.
In 50 weeks I have to shoot with any 5D, 50mm lens, iso50, 500, 5000 @f/5 and 1/5000, 1/500, 1/50… and so on.
At the end I´ll be printing a book.
Good luck for your project.
Simple – straight – good. I am pretty muchz on your project since last year december. Last week I traveled to Berlin and Hamburg with 3 prime lenses only (16 / 50 / 105 mm), using the 50 mm most of the time. Look forward to see your photos coming, seeing you play with DoF, bokeh and focus. Have fun, Bert!
Great project and what a very beautiful slide show! Reminds me of your ‘one day at the beach’ (?) slide show some eternities back, the one with location recorded audio. Maybe a little too fast, but thats internet speed. Hope we will see the pictures on flickr.
Astonishing that your children are not dodging you yet, though
My 3 yr old started to command me putting the camera away (sometimes). She only stops if promised ‘her’ G9 to do some shooting herself. Funnily she ignores the LCD and insists on using the optical finder.
Great stuff Bert, can’t wait to see the results, keep it up I love your stuff it is so inspirational, I might even make a bit more of an effort and use my own 50mm more often like other above it spends most of its time in the bag.
Really nice work Bert, Really Really hope there is more post-processing technique in your blog. Any plan to visit Asia?
Bert, great stuff as usual. I do this fairly often, but not for such a long period of time. I feel my creativity is both tested and strengthened when I constrain myself – either by a focal length, a single aperture, etc. I do enjoy the 50/1.4 though – its possibly the best value in a Canon lens.
Looking forward to see what’s next… thanks for sharing!
Bert, weerom de max!
Ik haat pc’s en kan niet volgen met al je downloads,
maar elke keer ik dan ff gemist heb, en ik zie al die mooie dingen…
Prachtig!
Have fun de komende 49 dagen,
veel succes, groetjes ; Katrien
Thx
@Lieven: Been there and the funny thing is that I see a lot of great work from photographers who didn’t have the budget to buy lots of gear when they started.
@Serge: Yes, you should
@Fini: I will upload some of the pics to http://www.flickr.com/photos/98609590@N00/ (and already did for day 1)
@Jeff: 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 are indeed great value for money
@Katrien: merci
Hi Bert,
. I know it is not so easy to spend some time to release a film, but I like your tutorial films and I found that I’ve already got accustomed to your really interesting films. Thank you Bert and have a nice time in your project.
At long last we’ve got video from you
Yuriy from Moscow
This is an interesting project.. something different from the usual 365 project, and you’ve upped the ante with a video too!
You seem to really have a good video workflow too, that lets you post stuff quickly.
Thanks for sharing!
Very cool. I feel inspired to pick my 50mm.
@Yuriy: We have quite some video footage on the hard drives waiting for some free time to be edited.
@Pepin: I did put some thinking in the video part of the project to make sure it was easy and fast enough to allow me to post a video every couple of days.
@Ray: Just do it
Love the idea and your starter video – just brilliant! Good luck with it. R

Great idea and excellent inspiration. My 17-50mm just broke so I have mounted the 50mm f/1.8 and I am going to follow suit and give it a shot as well. It sounds like a lesson in creativity waiting to happen.
Keep up the great work!
