Motivational Light DVD – the Wait is Almost Over

The wait is almost over … we are almost there. If we don’t encounter any unexpected setbacks my lighting DVD should be available by the end of this month. I’ve been thinking, writing, studying, testing and investigating the content of this DVD ever since I got the idea to do a DVD a few years ago. I’ve been analyzing what information photographers really need to bring their lighting to a whole new level. And I’ve been working very hard to find the best form of getting that information and vision across.

And even then, it took Pieter and me many months of hard work to plan, shoot and edit all this together. Right now we are editing like crazy to get the final details right. I’m extremely happy and proud about the way it all comes together in the editing booth. So I’m very excited that it will be available really soon now.

Here’s another sneak peek that will give you an idea of what we got out of our first days of recording.

View on YouTube

We are flooded with questions about the DVD, so let me give you some answers:

- The DVD is in English (or at least my interpretation of English).

- We are still editing but the final result will run somewhere between two and three hours. The biggest part is about lighting but there will be also some sections on gear and postprocessing. We also tried to squeeze in as much small practical tips as possible.

- We’ll offer the DVD as a download. That way you can access your purchase immediately and we avoid having to ask a higher price to cover costs like handling, disks, packaging, shipping, taxes, … We also shot everything in High Definiton and with the download you can enjoy the full quality. For those who want to have a physical disc, we’ll offer a slightly more expensive download + double DVD version. So as long as you have an internet account and a credit card, you can buy it anywhere in the world.

- We still need to finalize some last calculations but the final price for the download version of the DVD will be around 125 EUR / 175 USD

- We are honored that so many of you want to preorder but since you can have immediate access to the download, there’s no need to preorder.

If you have any more questions about the DVD, I’ll be happy to answer them in the comments.

I am so happy you decided to come out with something like this! I’ve been a fan of yours for over a year now. Because of your passion to teach (and you are so great at it too) I have refined my technique, and ultimately you are why I decided to go pro!! I am definitely buying this, even if I don’t learn much more than what you’ve already taught, I still think you deserve to get paid for all you’ve done– you are an inspiration to us all… THANK YOU!!

    Hey Bert,

Just had a thought re the DVD format…

I often put videos onto my iPhone for watching whilst out and about on the train for example. I know alot of the latest film releases now have an iPhone version attached in amongst the DVD too…is this something you’d consider offering?

    Just a thought.

    Best wishes to you,
    Glyn

I saw a twitter message from you wondering if you should include videos from a wedding shot you did recently….OFCOURSE!!! :) Please do not leave anything out….fill those DVD’s to the brim…it can only get better :) We’ll wait an additional week if needed :)

Good luck with the DVD release. Looking forward to downloading it.

  23. Marq says:
    March 18, 2010 at 09:08 PM

I second the DGV comment. You once mentioned there’d be “not much” to say about your post processing, but seeing some of the unprocessed pictures in the video, I’d love to learn how they transform into the beautifully looking ones showed at a later stage.

  24. Boggie Man says:
    March 19, 2010 at 09:07 PM

As much as I like your short video clips and blog posts on photography, I could not justify almost $200 for a DVD. It may be a very nice video, but who in the right mind would spend so much for it? Bill Gates … may be.
I guess you need to decide if you want to be “exclusive” (save as Gucci with their product) or WalMart of the photography. I can almost bet you, financially you do better with the latter. Think volume … Would YOU pay for a similar video on any other subject that you would like to learn?

Please do not take it as a criticism (I like your work very much), but as an opinion of a guy who has no emotional ties to the project.

  25. March 19, 2010 at 09:53 PM

    Thx all

@Glyn: I thought about the smaller format but I guess that would make illegal copying even easier.

@KKL: we just left all the bloopers in otherwise we didn’t have enough footage ;-)

@DGV: We probably going to include the wedding shoot

@DGV & Marq: We’ve included a screencast of the postprocessing (+ explanation) of at least one picture per lighting setup.

@Boggie Man: I appreciate your opinion but let me tell you that we are taking a big financial risk by pricing it under 200 USD which is actually very low. We’ll need to sell many many downloads before we break even on this project we’ve been working on for 6 months (not counting all the preparation during the last 2 years). If you look at similar products we are even below Walmart price. And yes I’ve bought quite a few DVD’s/downloads that were a lot more expensive and I’ve never regretted buying those. My investments in education have always been much more valuable than the thousands of dollars spent on equipment. As it’s knowledge that makes me a much better photographer than expensive gear.
Everyone has to determine for himself if an investment is worth it. If it’s not worth it for you than that’s fine with me too.

  26. March 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM

Bert, I have a question. I’m a learning semi-pro at the moment wanting to invest in eductation (I agree with your re: to BoggieMan BTW). My question is: should I invest in your DVD or in an upcoming LIME workshop? The DVD has obviously the advantage of being able to look at it again and again, but the workshop has the benefit of being able to ask direct questions.

Can’t make up my mind…. what would you advise?

    Peter

Really looking forward to it Bert,

  28. March 22, 2010 at 06:43 PM

200.00 is really not that much money to get into the head of a great photographer.

  29. Tomek says:
    March 26, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Wait is killing … Bert, will you come back to LIME podcasts after release ?

  30. Lourenço Abreu says:
    March 26, 2010 at 03:57 AM

The fact alone that it was you Bert that introduced me to lighting with flashes and made me a better photographer overall, is enough to make me buy this dvd.
and I always loved your confessions/lime videos so I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one (and learn a thing or two ;-)
The price is fair, providing the content is on the usual quality level (which i’m certain it is).
I’m not sure if i will have the money to buy this on the first day/week but i’ll buy it for sure.
PS. is it possible to pay with paypal? i prefer this method over credit card.
    Keep inspiring

hey bert, this is looking really promising! nice stuff. keep the price around $100 US – much more assessible for a lot of shooters, and selling more you’ll make more too … twitter will rake it in .-) looking frwd to it.

  33. Randy Owens says:
    March 26, 2010 at 11:07 PM

$175 is kind of high for a DVD. $100 would be a GREAT Price. I want to purchase this DVD so bad, but I have the Strobist DVD and One Light DVD – I would hate to spend that much money and it be the same information. I know bert did a great job with this video!

The dvd is a small masterpiece filled with great explanatory set-ups and scenes combined with a fantastic humorist touch by Bert.

    bonjour,

n’envisagez-vous pas de le faire en Français ? ou peut être sous-titré en Français ?
çà serait vraiment idéal pour les francophones ne comprenant pas trop l’anglais oral.

merci pour vidéo et votre blog

Any idea how big the final DL will be? Are we talking a full sized DVD? So 4Gb? Or a double density? I hope you have some serious servers set up to send out that much content for the flood of purchases you’re going to get.

  40. March 31, 2010 at 12:08 PM

    Thx all

@Peter: Both a real life workshop and the DVD have their benefits. Hard to tell which one is best for you as it depends on your skill level and the way you learn best. We will probably organize some Motivational Light workshops and offer them for a reduced price in combination with the DVD.

@Tomek: Yes, LIME will be back at full force soon.

@Lourenço: Thx, yes you can pay with paypall. The quality is much higher than the Confession/LIME videos by the way.

@Zed: We really priced it as low as we could. We are even taking a big risk by pricing it lower than similar products.

@Randy: Sure there are some things that are featured in the other DVD’s too but I didn’t want to make the same thing as David or Zack. The focus of motivational light is different and I believe it’s a great addition to Strobist and One Light.

@Firedemon: I can understand but it’s still way less expensive than buying another lens or flash. And I’m pretty sure that education is often a better investment than gear.

    @Sane: Peut-être dans le futur

@dcdp: The download is 3,4 GB (Quicktime H264 720i) – the hardcopies are on 2 disks, Standard Resolution NTSC

    bonjour,

je reviens sur ma question des sous-titrages (dommage pour la version FR)

    est-ce qu’il y a éventuellement des sous-titrages en anglais dans ce DVD ?

    merci

    Hey
This DVD is going to be great I’m pretty sure.
Been following your youtube Chanel and keep learning from you.
BUT I feel that there is to much Photoshop in the pictures, for example
the guy with the headset shot while there is a colorful blue door behind him
never the less the picture displayed after this set is so photoshoped, that the door became green…
I rather the simple things, thats what we love about photography.
    PEACE

  43. April 13, 2010 at 11:24 AM

    @sane: pas de sous-titrages malheuresement

@Moshe: Actually I only used Photoshop to remove some dust on the shots I made with the Hasselblad. All the other images in the DVD are just Lightroom. And believe it or not, we actually shot that guy in front of a blue AND a green garage door. So we didn’t change any colors there. But you couldn’t know that based on the trailers.

  44. June 19, 2010 at 12:13 AM

very good trailer. I am relatively new to photography and considering purchasing my first lighting kit, which I need for commercial pictures for my website. Even just the trailer gives good ideas, so thanks for this!
