Family Camping Trips

Family Camping Trips

Last summer was probably one of the worst in recent history when it comes to the weather. But that didn’t stop us from going on some short camping trips. We got lucky with the first one and got a very wet second one.

Trip 1: Purnode

I’ve camped in this pretty little valley since I was a kid and I’ve been coming back ever since. It’s great to see our own kids explore the same river, cliff and abandoned quarry. I’m not sure if I like the direction the campground is moving into but that probably won’t stop me from pitching a tent here once in a while.

Trip 2: Marbehan

While we kept it dry on the first trip, the floodgates of heaven opened up after that and nobody could find the switch to close them for weeks on end. We had some severe floods that affected a lot of people. We saw evidence of the destructive power everywhere. Many campgrounds got completely washed away but we decided that not postponing our second trip would be the best way to support the local economy.

With a tarp, board games, books, improvised dinners and hikes between the downpours we made the best of the situation.

With five teenagers who are discovering and building their own world, it’s a challenge to plan family trips. I’m perfectly fine with them exploring their own path and not always being there. But that won’t stop us from trying to do these trips.
