Another Brick in the Wall
My parents will tell you that 30 years ago I conducted a study about the different high schools in our area. My official statement is that I was just ahead of my time. But to be honest, I just got kicked out of schools way too often. I still believe my time in school wasn’t very productive. Sure I’ve learned some things but most of the time in school, was just a waste of youthful energy. And I believe that even today, that is still the case.
Yesterday, we’ve visited some high schools that my eldest daughter considers transferring too next year. In many ways it felt like stepping back in time.
Too be fair that old Apple II was just there for nostalgic reasons. We also met some very enthusiastic teachers and there is definitely progress in treating kids as individuals rather than numbers. There are good ideas floating around. The cynic in me, doubts they will be implemented in this century. Luckily my girlfriend keeps me in check and forces me to hope evolution is on its way.
And even if things don’t change nearly as fast as they should, teenagers can still write stuff on their shoes to express themselves and rebel against the system. Rebellion is a valuable skill to acquire. In the end, I’m sure our kids are going to be just fine.
