NYC with 3 new cameras
I was in New York City to teach some workshops at Fujikina for the launch of the X-H2. More about that camera in a later post, but I also tried out 3 other new cameras … the ones on my new phone.
I’m not a smartphone nerd. I may prefer a higher end model but I don’t upgrade my phone until it just can’t do the tasks that I need it to do anymore. And my good old Samsung S8 was at that point. I had to carry a powerbank for any trip longer than a couple of hours, and it didn’t have the ability to use an eSim (which I needed for my trip to the US). I won’t bore you with my research but I choose to upgrade to the Samsung S22.
And with that upgrade I suddenly also had a set of far superior cameras. Smartphone photography has never really interested me but lately I got a bit curious. After all, people with smartphones are often the competition for “real photographers” these days. Time to find out for myself how good these damned phones are. So next to my real cameras I played around with the cameras in my phone during my short trip to New York.
Here’s a selection of images:
I pretty much shot everything on full automatic and let the phone do all the work. Although I still prefer my Fuji’s for any real photography, the results were better than expected and I’m probably just scratching the technological surface. With my old phone I basically only took pictures to remember where I parked my car. But I see myself making pictures with this new phone way more often. With my Youtube channel in mind I’m also playing around a bit with the video options of the S22.
I was probably the last person on earth that didn’t reach for his phone for a quick picture. Maybe this phone can convince me me to not ALWAYS carry a real camera.
