When the guys from a nearby camera store asked me if I wanted to test a superzoom lens, I felt almost insulted: Those aren’t for “serious photographers, or are they?
I decided to set my pre-conceived ideas aside and take the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD on a short family camping trip and made a little review video of my experiences.
All in all, I must admit that this lens is way better than what the bad rap of superzooms would suggest. Sure it’s a compromise but Tamron did a great job balancing features and physical limitations. However I felt it’s just not for me but that’s not the fault of the lens. My brain simply works better with the clearly defined limitations of a prime lens. I feel like I may have made some decent photos on the trip but I didn’t make MY photos.
But if you are looking for an affordable travel zoom or need versatility on a budget, this is not a bad choice at all.
